PRP Treatment Protocols at Pine Hollow Veterinary Services

To ensure the safest and most effective outcome, we follow specific guidelines when recommending and performing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy.

What PRP Can Help Treat In Pets

PRP works by supporting the body’s natural healing process and helping repair damaged tissues.

  • Arthritis
  • Soft tissue injuries
  • Joint conditions such as dysplasia

Before Your Pet’s PRP Appointment

  • A recent radiograph (within the last 6 months) of the affected joint is recommended. If one is not available, imaging may be performed the day of the procedure.
  • Bloodwork should be completed within the last 3 months. This may include a CBC and, in some cases, an EKG.
  • A CBC will be repeated the morning of the procedure to confirm adequate platelet levels.

Eligibility and Important Considerations

  • This procedure is only offered at Albion Animal Center.
  • PRP is not recommended for pets with active metastasis, platelet disorders, immune-mediated disease, or active infections.
  • Pets currently on steroids require a 4-week washout period prior to treatment.
  • Pets with active infections (such as Lyme disease, skin infections, or ear infections) should postpone treatment until resolved.

What to Expect After PRP Treatment

  • A single PRP injection may provide relief for 6 to 9 months.
  • When combined with laser therapy, benefits may last over a year.

Follow-Up and Additional Treatments

  • A recheck appointment is required approximately 2 weeks after the injection to evaluate progress.
  • This recheck is included in the cost of the initial treatment.
  • In more severe cases, an additional PRP injection may be recommended and scheduled accordingly.
