Protecting Your Cat from Fleas & Ticks
How would I know if my cat has fleas?
Some signs that your cat might have fleas include excessive itching, the presence of scabs, or hair loss. This usually occurs around the base of the tail, which is a characteristic location for flea issues.
How do I check my cat for fleas or ticks?
To detect ticks, you might feel a small bump on your cat and realize it's a tick. Ticks can be very small and hard to see. Fleas can also be difficult to notice, as some cats are such good groomers that they eat the fleas before you see them. Even if you don't see fleas, your cat could still have them.
How do I prevent my cat from getting fleas and ticks?
To prevent fleas and ticks, we recommend using flea prevention year-round, whether your cat is indoor or outdoor. Indoor cats can still get fleas from us bringing them in on our clothes, or if you have a dog or another cat that goes in and out, they can bring fleas in as well.
We recommend sticking with name brands like Frontline, Catigo, and Advantage, which are available over the counter. Prescription products include Bravecto Plus, Revolution Plus, and Credelio. We also recommend Seresto collars, as they are a reputable brand. Ensure you purchase flea and tick prevention from a safe source, like a veterinarian or a veterinarian's online website, to avoid fake products that can be harmful to your cats.
Are there natural flea and tick preventions for my cat?
Some have heard of natural flea and tick preventions, but we tend to avoid these as they can contain toxic ingredients like garlic or essential oils that are not safe for cats. We advise staying away from these options.
What are the health risks for my cat if they have fleas or ticks?
Fleas and ticks can be very detrimental to your cat's health. They can cause anemia due to blood loss and carry diseases that may also affect humans. Therefore, it's always best to keep your pets on flea and tick prevention year-round.
